Drain Flies: What They Are, Where They Breed, and How to Actually Eliminate Them

Drain flies — also called moth flies or filter flies — are among the most misidentified nuisance insects in Missouri homes. They look like tiny moths, hover near sinks and bathroom fixtures, and resist elimination as long as their actual breeding site remains untreated. The adults that homeowners see are secondary to the problem; eliminating the organic film in plumbing where larvae develop is the only approach that produces lasting results.

Drain Fly vs. Fungus Gnat: The Identification That Changes the Fix

Drain Fly (Psychoda spp.)

Tiny moth-like appearance, fuzzy wings held roof-like over body at rest. 1/16–1/8 inch. Found near sink drains, floor drains, and bathroom fixtures. Wings have a distinctive mottled pattern under magnification. Breeds in the gelatinous organic film inside drains and pipes.

Fungus Gnat (Bradysia spp.)

Slender, mosquito-like body with long legs. Dark with clear wings. Found near houseplants and soil. Breeds in the top layer of moist potting mix. Often mistaken for drain flies when both are present. Fix is different: reduce watering frequency and let soil surface dry between waterings.

Where Drain Flies Actually Breed

Drain fly larvae develop in the gelatinous biofilm — a layer of decomposed organic material, bacteria, and soap residue — that coats the interior of slow or infrequently used drains. The P-trap of a bathroom sink that is used infrequently, a floor drain in a basement or utility room that retains standing water, and a shower drain with significant hair and soap accumulation are the most common breeding sites in Missouri homes. A simple test: press a piece of clear tape over the drain opening overnight — drain flies exiting the drain will stick to it, confirming the breeding site.

Eliminating the Breeding Site

Spraying adult drain flies with contact insecticide kills the adults you see and has no effect on the larvae developing below. The breeding site must be physically cleaned. For sink drains, use a stiff drain brush to scrub the inside of the drain pipe below the drain cover and inside the P-trap access, followed by a drain gel treatment (enzyme-based products that digest organic film rather than chemical drain cleaners) applied per product instructions. For floor drains, remove the cover and clean accumulated organic material from inside the drain housing. For severe cases in commercial properties or old plumbing, professional drain treatment with industrial enzyme products is more effective than consumer products.
